Get Closer with Dr. apt. Elfahmi, M.Si., Enthusiastic Researcher in Medicinal Plant Biotechnology

Dr. apt. Elfahmi, M.Si or Pak El, is one of the School of Pharmacy lecturer. He completed his bachelor degree and pharmacist at The Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Andalas, Padang, West Sumatera, 1993 and 1995 respectively. He graduated from ITB as a Master in Science (Pharmacy) in 1997 then in 2006 he got his Doctoral Degree in medicinal plant biotechnology from Groningen University, Netherland.

Pak El has been teaching in School of Pharmacy ITB since 1998. He is the member of Department of Pharmaceutical Biology in School of Pharmacy and teaches natural product medicine such as Pharmaceutical Botany, Pharmacognosy, Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Natural Product etc.

Pak El is an enthusiastic researcher in medicinal plant biotechnology. He concerns to increase artemisinin as the one of malaria medicine that got from Artemisia annua plant using biotechnology approach. He has a patent in increasing ADS gene (one of important gene in biosynthetic of artemisinin) to gain artemisinin content in plant.

He has been appointed as the Head of Magister and Doctoral Study Programmes at the School of Pharmacy, ITB (2011-2015), Head of Biosciences and Biotechnology Research Center, ITB (2015-2019). Since June 2020, he has been appointed as a Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, School of Pharmacy, and The Head of University Centre of Excellence-Nutraceutical, Bioscience and Biotechnology Research Centre, ITB. Also, he actively participates in National Agency of Food and Drug Control of Republic Indonesia (BPOM).
