The scope of the scientific field of the Doctor of Pharmacy study program is closely related to the undergraduate Pharmacy study program, both the pharmaceutical science and technology study program and clinical and community pharmacy and its master’s program. Inline, the scientific knowledge in the doctoral program is a further development of the knowledge obtained at the undergraduate and master’s levels of Pharmacy. The body of knowledge of the doctoral program of pharmacy is a multidisciplinary science in relation to drugs, cosmetics, health supplement products, medical devices, and other pharmaceutical preparations, including applied sciences derived from biology (life sciences), chemistry, physics and human behavioral sciences. Science in the field of medicinal chemistry ranging from synthesis, analysis and characterization, discovery and development of new compounds is covered by the fields of analytical pharmaceutical chemistry, food analysis & safety, and medicinal chemistry. Science related to pharmaceutics includes pharmaceutical technology, biopharmaceuticals, pharmacokinetics and pharmaceutical biotechnology. Science related to drugs derived from natural materials includes the fields of phytochemistry, standardization of natural materials, elucidation of the structure of natural material compounds, and biotechnology of medicinal plants. Pharmacology-toxicology science includes knowledge in the fields of pharmacology, toxicology, pharmacotherapy, clinical pharmacy and drug interactions.
Challenges Faced
The era of globalization has a major impact on the future lives of the world’s people, including Indonesia. This impact can be felt in various fields. The development of drugs and other pharmaceutical preparations, including the field, is greatly influenced by the opening of wider trade channels. The readiness of high-quality resources with the highest competence according to the KKNI is an unavoidable need, so that it becomes a serious challenge for the pharmacy doctoral program in preparing these resources while producing research products that can be widely utilized. Science and technology in the field of pharmacy and drug products in order to improve public health at the global level are developing very rapidly. This development is marked by the increasing variety of pharmaceutical products and services. The increasing trend of research and development in the Pharmaceutical Industry in the world and several pharmaceutical industries in Indonesia will have an impact on the broad segment related to manufacturing and provide a clear message to universities that organize education and research to seriously improve the quality of education and research that can answer various problems that exist in all stakeholders. The development of existing drugs and the discovery of new drugs have shown that scientific knowledge is fundamental in achieving the discovery and development of these drugs. Until now, research at universities has been very little related to research and development in the industrial world. This phenomenon will be a challenge for the ITB School of Pharmacy to work together with stakeholders to develop various solutions to overcome problems related to drugs and health through research activities. The need for quality human resources in the pharmaceutical industry has increased sharply, especially those related to pharmaceutical science and technology. Research conducted in the pharmacy doctoral program, most of the study period of which is used for research, has a major role in the development of various aspects related to drugs and other pharmaceutical preparations.

Curriculum
To be able to follow the Doctoral Pharmacy Study Program properly, students need to have an educational background equivalent to a master’s degree in the fields of Pharmacy. Prospective participants with a master’s background such as Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Dentistry, Food Technology, Chemical Engineering, and other relevant fields can be accepted, as long as they pass the interview and meet the TPA and TOEFL requirements. However, prospective students with a master’s degree in other relevant fields must take additional courses according to their options and other courses determined by the KPPS.
Pharmacy graduates with excellent academic achievements are allowed to directly follow the doctoral program without going through the master’s program (superior doctoral program). Participants in the superior doctoral program are selected very strictly, allowing students in this program to complete their doctoral studies in 3 years. If at the qualification stage the participant is deemed unfit to continue until the completion of the S3 program, then the person concerned will be terminated until the master’s stage.
